The incorporated municipality of the Village of Sunbury is established and governed by the laws of the State of Ohio and the United States of America. (Sunbury has not yet adopted a charter form of government.) Village public meetings are typically held in the town hall located on the square in Sunbury. But its rooms are also available to the public. If you would like to use the town hall, please review the Rules for the Sunbury Town Hall. The Mayor is an elected public official mainly responsible for the Sunbury Administration and Police Department. The Council (legislative authority) consists of six elected council members. The Mayor serves as council chair and is entitled to vote only to break a tie vote of council. The Village Council is responsible for all municipal spending of money and the adoption of all local laws governing the residents and businesses of Sunbury. Each year the Sunbury Council is required to adopt RULES OF COUNCIL that establish how the public meetings of council are conducted. The Sunbury Planning and Zoning Board is a committee that consists of five members. The Mayor acts as chair of this board, and one council member is elected by his or her peers to serve. Also serving are three, at-large, appointed zoning members. The zoning board is generally responsible for reviewing variances and making recommendations to council for approval. There are several projects Council and the Planning & Zoning Board are working on, including the so-called Sunbury Comprehensive Master Plan - Draft 2/2/04. This document is not yet adopted. |
